Marietta College's forensics team recently finished third in Sweepstakes in a competition held at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., on Feb. 9.

"Practicing into the wee hours of the morning, laughing when things go right, and laughing when things don't go exactly as planned, make this team the special one that it is," said Dr. Mabry O'Donnell, McCoy and Hillyer Professor and coach of the team. "Furthermore, we enjoy being around one another and cheering for one another. All of this, and we are academically based—what could be better?"

Leading Marietta were two first-place finishes by Celia Brockway '11 and one first-place finish by Heather Boomer '09. Brockway finished first in both persuasive speaking and after-dinner speaking, in addition to two third-place finishes in informative speaking and dramatic interpretation. Boomer finished first in the religious informative category, a category not offered at other competitions.

"Once we walked into the Student Center at Geneva College, I remembered the tournament from two years ago. This is a special tournament because they offer a different event, religious informative. It was a great tournament to round out our season," said Boomer, president of the team.

In all, Marietta won 15 awards including the third-place Sweepstakes prize. Other Marietta finishers included: Scott Burnham '11 with a third-place finish in duo interpretation, a fourth-place finish in religious informative and two fifth-place awards in informative speaking and impromptu speaking, Carly Wesemeyer '10 with a fifth-place finish in religious informative, Ryan Ellis '11 with a sixth-place finish in religious informative and a fourth-place finish in after-dinner speaking, Tim Kemble '08 with a third-place prize in extemporaneous speaking, and Megan Patsch '11 with a third-place finish in duo interpretation.

"Geneva was a great tournament to attend. Since the Marietta Forensics team is now very close, we started to socialize more with the other teams. There was a true sense of community," Brockway said.

Marietta competed against eight other teams including: Alderson-Broaddus College, Bridgewater College, Geneva College, Malone College, Ohio Valley University, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, Robert Morris College, and West Virginia University-Parkersburg.

"The Geneva Tournament was great - great experience, great pieces, and great insight, all which will help us prepare for nationals," Burnham said.
